Maria was born in Croydon, London in 1985 and has subsequently lived the West Country for most of her life. She obtained a degree in Fine Art from the University of Plymouth (in Exeter) in 2007. She mostly paints outdoors and seeks impressionistic portrayal of light and colour; she also enjoys the occasional still-life in the studio when the weather is against her and since her other hobby is collecting antiques, there is never a shortage of objects to be found providing interesting subjects. Maria's paintings attest to her strength in drawing and are accompanied in a belief that drawing is the foundation of all great figurative work. Maria regularly enters national and local Open Exhibitions and has exhibited with the South West Academy and the Royal Institute of Oil painters as well as participating in a number of joint exhibitions. Maria's dedication towards accurately portraying her subject and her sensitive treatment of light, situation and place is rooted in the great British tradition of figurative painting. She has a strong interest in many of the 20th century's major schools including, predominantly, the Camden Town and East London groups, as well as modern greats such as Bernard Dunstan, Tom Coates and Ken Howard.
